June is Men’s Mental Health Month. Here’s why a change of scenery might be the small but powerful shift you need.
There’s a particular kind of quiet that builds up when you work from home alone for too long. The commute is zero seconds, the dress code is whatever you want, and the fridge is always nearby. On paper, it sounds ideal. But for a lot of men, the reality is that the walls start closing in.
Men’s Mental Health Month is a timely reminder to check in with ourselves and the men in our lives. Not with grand gestures, but with small, practical ones. Like getting dressed, walking out the front door, and sitting somewhere with other humans for a few hours.
The Loneliness Nobody Talks About
Research consistently shows that men are less likely to talk about their mental health, less likely to seek support, and more likely to mask how they’re really doing. Remote and hybrid working has brought huge benefits – but for men who already struggle to build or maintain social connections, working alone at home can quietly deepen that isolation.
It’s not always dramatic. It’s the gradual drift from colleagues you used to see daily. The Zoom calls that end and leave you in total silence. The days when your only real conversation was with the dog.
Why Getting Out – Even Just Once in a While – Matters
You don’t have to become a coworking regular or overhaul your routine. Sometimes it’s just about breaking the pattern. Treating yourself to a change of scenery – even for a single day – can reset your headspace in ways that are hard to explain until you try it.
Working around other people, even strangers, all quietly getting on with their own thing, creates a sense of ambient community. You’re not alone. There’s gentle background energy. You tend to focus better, feel less sluggish, and often go home in a better mood than you left in.
At Ely Work Collective, we see it all the time. Members who pop in for a day here and there often say it wasn’t even about the desk or the Wi-Fi. It’s more about being part of something, even briefly.
A Space That Works for You (and Your Wellbeing)
Ely Work Collective is rooted in the community here in Ely. We’re not a faceless office block or a corporate hub. We’re a place where local people work alongside each other, grab a coffee, have a proper conversation, and occasionally solve each other’s problems.
And it goes beyond the workspace. Our members get access to perks with local health and wellness partners, including Fresh and Puzzle Pilates, where you can enjoy discounted taster months and money off memberships. Whether it’s a reformer pilates session after your workday, a fitness class to break up your week, or simply building a healthier routine around your work, it’s all part of what being an Ely Work Collective member opens up.
Looking after your mental and physical health isn’t separate. It’s the same conversation.
In our latest Made In Ely podcast episode, we spoke with Gemma at eMotion Fit about the benefits of breathwork for your mental health and her men-only sessions in the woods. From someone who has been to several of these events, I can’t recommend them strongly enough. You can listen to the episode below:
A Note to the Men Reading This
You probably don’t need someone to tell you that things have felt a bit flat lately, or that you’ve been more in your head than usual, or that you can’t remember the last time you had a proper catch-up with someone. You already know.
This isn’t a call to fix everything overnight. It’s just a nudge: come and work somewhere different for a day. See how you feel. Have a coffee with someone new. Let the change of scenery do its quiet work.
We’d love to have you.
